I did the detect and repair to no avail and I couldn't find the "OST" file. The last version that I remember using was Outlook 97 and that did not have an auto spell checker. For these 2 reasons, I do not recommend using this workaround in a production environment but it might come in handy for some testing environments. If I create a new email from the default email , enter the subject then tab to the body, all is good.
Note that this workaround isn't supported though and might lead to crashes if Outlook actually does make Word specific calls. I could hit the F7 key and it would say it had checked the spelling and nothing was checked. Go Figure.
