Be extremely careful in lifting off the lower panel. Choose Show Keyboard Viewer from the Input menu in the menu bar. Restart your Mac and see if that helps. You could try a PRAM reset on the iMac if you have a wired keyboard to hand, but not sure this would help, maybe worth a try.
